Acupuncture and IVF

Standard

I had my first acupuncture treatment this afternoon!

My RE never specifically recommended that I get it but I kept seeing fliers in his office and of course reading about all of my fellow bloggers experiences with it. I decided that even if it doesn’t help THAT much, it can’t hurt!

The acupuncturist went over my history and thinks my liver might be playing a part in my infertility. He said the way my body reacted to Metformin (elevated liver enzymes) could be a clue. I’ve also been having a lot of digestive issues for the past several months.

His first suggestions were to cut out my daily diet coke and pretty much all caffeine. He also wants me to try to stop eating bread and animal dairy…um…really? I’ve cut out carbs before but carbs and dairy?! I going to try to cut back but I’m not sure I can cut everything completely. Also, drink 3 liters of water a day. I drink about 2 now and I’m already peeing every 20 minutes so that should be fun.

In addition to all that, I also spent a small fortune on vitamins/supplements today:

Multi-vitamin 1 per day
B-complex 1 per day
Nutra Flax 4 per day
NAC 2 per day
DIM-PRO 100 1 per day
A1 Enzymes 2 per day
Shu Gan Formula 6 per day

Is anyone familiar with any of these? He said they are mostly for liver support, digestion, and inflammation.

He wants me to stop my Prenatal in favor for the multi-vitamin and stop my Biotin and Fish Oil. I’m not sure how I feel about stopping the Prenatal. What do you guys think?

Hey! So, I have dabbled in Acupuncture and Chinese medicine. Basically, your western medicine Dr. will tell you one thing and then the Chinese medicine Dr. will tell you another. I questioned my RE on this in the beginning and he basically said that there is probably something to Chinese Medicine, as it’s been around forever, but if I was going to go through western medicine for treatment, that acupuncture was fine, but to not take any other supplements they recommended. It may be a good question to ask your doc. I hope this helps a little bit!

    • Thank you! That is helpful. I am kind of worried about taking all of that with the injections but he assured me that he’s been doing this for years and that it will be fine. I will probably bring it up with my RE just to be safe!

  2. I did acupuncture before both my fresh IVF cycles and am doing it for my FET now. I definitely think it makes a difference. I felt more relaxed and my lining was always great. Like the poster above I was told not to take any herbs/supplements aside from the prenatal, which I have a prescription for as I need a higher dose of folic acid. I was told that the probiotics I take are fine. So I would check with your RE and follow their advice.

  3. I am working with an acupuncturist and she is also a Chinese doctor. She has always held back on her supplements and herbs and said it was an option for me if I was trying without the clinic. I don’t think I would switch up my vitamins at this point.

  4. I’ve been getting acupuncture since the beginning of my IVF journey and have found it great. My lady is a physiotherapist and has never recommended supplements or vitamins – just particular vegetables. I agree with the ladies above that it might be a good idea to check with your RE first? Best of luck! I look forward to following your journey.

  5. I personally would talk to my doctor about the herbs/advice before actually doing it. Just because someone tells you it’s ok, there may be a medical reason your doc doesn’t have you taking it. I would also advise against stopping the prenatal as it provides more of the critical nutrients for baby making

  6. In agreement with everyone above. I would advice you to still take the prenatal or at least folic acid as it helps to prevent spina bifida in babies. When we were doing acupuncture the RE had us stop all herbs we got from the acupuncturist because they may have interacted with the injections.
